Derechos de los animales

Cuando se habla de derechos de los animales no se hace referencia a la acepción jurídica o legislativa del término “derechos”, sino que se hace en un sentido moral. En esa misma línea, quienes reivindican que sean respetados los derechos de los animales son conscientes de que para ello es imprescindible que la sociedad cambie la visión que tiene de ellos y que comprenda que los animales merecen respeto. No se trata de un cambio legislativo. A continuación, se explica por qué los animales tienen derechos.

Para que a alguien se le reconozca un derecho es necesario que tenga interés en tal derecho. Por ejemplo, no tiene sentido que se reconozca a un hombre el derecho a un parto con apropiada atención sanitaria. Con los animales sucede exactamente lo mismo, a los animales se les debe reconocer unos derechos concordantes con sus intereses. Esto quiere decir que quienes reclaman los derechos de los animales no están pidiendo que se les conceda derecho al voto. Los animales no tienen ningún interés en votar y, por consiguiente, ningún defensor de los derechos de los animales demandaría que se reconociese tal “derecho”. Si bien es cierto que quienes se oponen a reconocer los derechos de los animales con frecuencia recurren a argucias de este tipo: difunden la idea de que los derechos de los animales consisten en llevar a los animales a las urnas o disparates similares.

La mayoría de los animales disponen de un sistema nervioso que les permite tener sensaciones. Dentro de esas sensaciones están aquellas que podríamos llamar agradables (como el placer) y las desagradables (dolor, estrés, miedo, etc.). Como es lógico, los animales tienen interés en tener sensaciones agradables y evitar las desagradables. Desean disfrutar de la vida y, por supuesto, no sufrir; tampoco quieren que se les mate. En consonancia con tales intereses se les deben reconocer una serie de derechos. Gary Francione destaca tres derechos básicos de los animales: el derecho a la libertad, el derecho a la vida, y el derecho a que no se les cause sufrimiento. Francione resume estos tres derechos en uno sólo: el derecho a no ser tratado como propiedad (como si los animales fuesen recursos para beneficio de los humanos). La noción de que los animales son seres con sentimientos, que no están en este mundo para servirnos a los humanos y que desean disfrutar de sus vidas es una idea comúnmente aceptada desde una perspectiva vegana.

When you try your best but you don't succeed, when you get what you want but not what you need, when you feel so tired but you can't sleep, stuck in reverse. As we grow up, we learn that even the one person that wasn't supposed to ever let us down, probably will. You'll have your heart broken and you'll break others' hearts. So take too many pictures, laugh too much, forgive freely and love like you've never been hurt. Life comes with no guarantees, no time outs, and no second chances. You just have to live life to the fullest, tell someone what they mean to you and tell someone off, speak out, dance in the pouring rain, hold someone's hand, comfort a friend, fall asleep watching the sun come up, stay up late, be a flirt and smile until your face hurts. Don't be afraid to take chances or fall in love and most of all: live in the moment because every second you spend angry or upset is a second of happiness you can never get back.

The art of getting by

So many roads, so many detours. So many choices, so many mistakes. As we drive along this road called life, occasionally a gal will find herself a little lost. When that happens, I guess she has to let go of the coulda, shoulda, woulda… buckle up, and just keep going. As we speed along this endless road to the destination called ‘who we hope to be’, I can’t help but whine, are we there yet?
